South West Dance Hub

Swift Dance Company

South West Dance Hub (SWDH) was established in September 2021 to address the increasing demand for a supportive and inspiring environment for dance artists and enthusiasts. This initiative aims to cultivate a space where artists can share their skills, learn from one another, and collectively grow in their craft. Supported by Exeter Phoenix, SWDH benefits from studio space, annual performance opportunities, and marketing resources, which enable us to host a weekly morning hub company session and an open afternoon session for the artistic community. With a strong emphasis on dance and movement, SWDH welcomes artists from diverse disciplines, including music, film, visual art, and digital creation, fostering collaboration and the development of professional practices.

‘SWDH has totally changed my outlook on life. I feel more fulfilled in the place where I live, connecting with other artists and working towards creative projects.’ Jane Berry, drama teacher and performer.

In our creative hub, we foster an environment that encourages connections and collaborations among diverse art forms, emphasizing exploration during studio time. This commitment has led to the development of a vibrant cross-art community, bringing together professional artists from various disciplines including filmmakers, visual artists, musicians, spoken word artists, as well as costume and theatre practitioners. By facilitating interactions and shared experiences, we empower artists to innovate and inspire one another, resulting in a dynamic interchange of ideas and practices. Our focus on collaboration not only enriches individual artistic journeys but also contributes to the overall growth and dynamism of the community as a whole. Through this collective effort, we aim to push the boundaries of creativity and foster a spirit of inclusion and experimentation in the arts.

In 2023, we proudly established ourselves as the dance company in residence at the Exeter Phoenix, a milestone that allows us to continue creating innovative professional work while supporting our core members. This residency not only enriches our artistic endeavors but also fosters the growth of the hub, which serves as a creative and playful space for the entire community. Our company members gain invaluable experience and have the chance to experiment with new ideas during our hub sessions. Additionally, we we have successfully secured Arts Council funding for our collaboration with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM).

The South West Dance Hub now operates as the umbrella organisation for Swift Dance Company and the hub, further enhancing our commitment to dance and community engagement in the region.
